DigiTain: Funded EU eco-project for the fully digital development of sustainable vehicle drives

The news has been reporting it for quite some time: The electric vehicles from Asian manufacturers that are pushing into the market in particular are challenging the global leadership position of German car manufacturers. In addition, there are the high ecological expectations on the part of society and politicians for more environment-friendly vehicles. Circular products with a minimum use of resources and a minimum CO2footprint are required.

As already reported, the classic automotive product development process can only partially meet the growing requirements with regard to ecological evaluation criteria, such as the development-accompanying validation of the ever stricter requirements for environmental and climate protection. The DigiTain project, which was therefore launched primarily by the automotive industry, is supported by the Federal Government and the European Union as part of their economic stimulus package "New, innovative products as a key for vehicles and mobility of the future".

Goals of the automotive industry with DigiTain

Together with their suppliers, automotive manufacturers are striving to build a fully digital, cross-divisional and cross-functional development network. The goal is a controlled, sustainability-related product development process. By means of integrated methods, models and tools, they want to validate and certify the economic, ecological and social quality criteria along the entire value creation process. At the same time, this helps them to make informed decisions for efficient and competitive implementation.

XPLM's solutions come into play here as part of two work packages. They integrate or link the multidisciplinary system models as well as engineering and simulation data into continuous data chains. On the basis of Aras Innovator and XSPHERE Federation, we develop and implement the central platform for:

  • the collaborative use of data, objects and documents,
  • the construction of predictive CAE models from the system components of the vehicle architecture,
  • the integration of digital methods and tools for development-accompanying sustainability assessment
  • integrated engineering processes.

Overview of the work packages in which XPLM is involved

As part of 2 work packages with their sub-work packages, XPLM develops and implements a central platform for the collaborative management and use of multi-disciplinary processes and models as well as their data, objects and documents for digital system modeling.

WP 1: The goal is the development of a generic framework for the sustainability-oriented product development process (NEP), including the methods, tools and parameters for digital life cycle assessment and their development-accompanying controlling. This generic model is intended to serve as a template for the NEPs of all drive units.

WP 2: Alternative drive concepts require new system components in the vehicle architecture. For example, they significantly influence the load paths in various crash requirements, not least due to new production technologies. This poses new challenges to the predictive capability in crash calculation.
